Holidays in the USA cover so many bases that it's hard to know where to start. From the awesome urban landscape in New York to the theme park haven of Orlando, the glitz of Las Vegas or the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, a holiday to the USA really does offer a world of opportunity.
The country spans six time zones and 51 states from Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean to Florida on the Atlantic east coast so much will depend on how far you are prepared to travel. From the UK, the east coast is seven to eight hours away with a five hour time difference meaning that New York and Florida are certainly managable for a seven day holiday. USA afficionados will quickly point out however that the east coast is just the tip of the iceburg. Las Vegas beckons many from the UK with flights direct from Manchester and Gatwick taking between 10 and 11 hours. This surreal desert city is known as the gambling capital of the world and is also famed for wierd and wonderful ways of getting married, often officiated by Elvis impersonators - it really could only happen in the good old USA! Holidays in Las Vegas are never going to be dull and it can be a great stop off point for those wanting the slightly more spiritually uplifting experience of visiting the Grand Canyon.
Much further north, and a slightly shorter nine hour plane journey from the UK, lies Chicago and the Great Lakes. This is an underated but superb region for a summer holiday in the USA, ideally in June, July or August when the weather is at its best. Chicago is a bustling city with heaps to see and do and it is to be found right on the shores of Lake Michigan and not far from the region on the south west shore where many a local will spend their summer holidays. USA visitors will find ocean style beaches and all the pleasures of a seaside holiday many hundreds of miles from the Atlantic.
No round up of great holidays in the USA would be complete without mention of the mythical west coast. A 12-hour flight from the UK (with departure options from regional airports like Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow) LA really is at the extreme in terms of travel time for a holiday to the USA. Having said that there's no other place on earth like it. Do a bit of star gazing at the Chinese Theatre, visit Universal Studios or the original Disneyland theme parks or just take in the superb coastline and the year round great weather. Further north you'll find San Francisco and not quite such an idyllic climate, you are probably better off staying away in winter, but San Fran is absolutely worth the trip. If you have the time take a hire car up the stunning coastal Route 1 from LA and when you get there take in the delights of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the world famous tram network.

The historic mother road of America Route 66 still has a lot of traffic these days. Rout 66 is so famous that both a song and a television serial was based on it. Today it is still a part of Americana. It ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. Many small towns came alive along the way of many visitors. However, as fast it came, it went also. The interstate highway system of America waits for no one.

Route 66 was commissioned on November 11th, 1926. About 800 miles was already partially paved. It was totally finished in 1937. The total length was 2248 miles. It stayed on most maps until 1984. The last town to be passed up by the new interstate highway was Williams, Arizona. Route 66 went through three time zones.

Each year there are still many events that go on with the use of Route 66. Here are a few for the 2008 season.

Feb. 7th and 8th Jazz Festival in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Feb 8th through the 10th Indian Art Festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Route 66 was a major highway for immigrants that moved West through the middle 1900's. People and communities along the route became prosperous. Those same people fought to keep Route 66 open in the later part of the 1900's. On June 27th, 1985 Rout 66 was decommissioned as a major highway. It was no longer considered as a federal highway.
